Police responding to a call of a barricade subject in the 400 block of Sussex Street shortly before 2 p.m. summoned firefighters after seeing smoke coming from the attic of the 2½-story home.

They got the victim outside and conducted CPR. It wasn't immediately clear whether the victim survived.

Firefighters had the bulk of the blaze knocked down within 20 minutes but then had to contend with cluttered conditions.

They declared it under control about 20 minutes later.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office was responding.
